National Braille Reform: Standard English Braille to Unified English Braille

The Challenge

Kenya’s blind and low-vision learners have long used Standard English Braille — a code increasingly out of step with the internationally adopted Unified English Braille standard, creating gaps in accessible materials, examinations, and global compatibility.

My Role

Supported secretariat activities for the national transition, engaging government institutions, disability organisations, examination bodies, teacher trainers, and organisations of persons with visual impairments, culminating in a Technical Working Group workshop in Naivasha.

Impact

Laid the technical and stakeholder groundwork for nationwide implementation, beginning with Grade One learners in 2029 — a reform that will shape how an entire generation of learners reads.

Inclusive education is a global conversation, but its success depends on local action, local partnerships, and local ownership.
